From Biplanes to Jets: The RAF’s Long Watch in the Far East

Newly released from author Steve Bond and Grub Street Publishing is RAF Boys in the Far East: True Tales of the RAF in India, South East Asia and Hong Kong.

For 82 years the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which in 1918 became the Royal Air Force (RAF), maintained a permanent military aviation presence in the Far East. Throughout that time a huge variety of squadrons, flying many different aircraft types, together with all the necessary operational, technical and administrative support, took on all that was asked of them. The first RFC units arrived in India in 1915. RAF India grew substantially in the interwar period and throughout World War Two. Various changes in the command structure finally saw the creation of the Far East Air Force (FEAF) in June 1949, covering South East Asia and Hong Kong. In the 1960s the UK government decided to withdraw all forces East of Suez and on 31 October 1971 the FEAF disbanded and most UK forces withdrew from Singapore at this time. The last RAF unit to leave the region was 28 Squadron flying. They had been operating Whirlwind and Wessex helicopters in Hong Kong until the territory was handed back to China in 1997. RAF Boys in the Far East illustrates what it was like for those air and ground crew who were there by telling their stories in their own words, supported by explanation of the situations at the time and photographs primarily drawn from veterans’ own collections. The stories are as varied as the locations, the units and the personnel; everyday operations, exercises, triumph and tragedy, off duty time, and of course, the humour for which the RAF is renowned. Chapters focus on differing aircraft roles and their operations, including emphasis on the war years in India and Burma, and the Singapore era with actions such as Operation Firedog and the Indonesian Confrontation. Today those veterans who look back on their time served in the FEAF do so with a great deal of pride, and rightly so. This is their story.

The 256 page book is available in hardcover, Kindle and audiobook editions.

See What the New England Air Museum Looked Like in 1992 [Video]

Our YouTube channel DX Modelworks has taken a break from model aircraft build logs to bring you a new video showing what the New England Air Museum looked like in 1992.

The brief video tour provides general views, close-ups of aircraft such as the F6F Hellcat and the Fokker Dr.1, and a look at the models on display. It is a wonderful time capsule that shows how the museum has evolved over the years, and it also evokes nostalgia for those who visited during this period.

Flying Shuttleworth Aircraft: New Edition of “From Bleriot to Spitfire” Released in US

Recently released in the US is the latest edition of From Bleriot to Spitfire: Flying the Historic Planes of the Shuttleworth Collection by Scott Butler.

The aeroplanes of the Shuttleworth Collection span the first 40 years of aviation from the 1909 Blériot to the late 1940s; these rare and often unique machines are still regularly flown and displayed over the aerodrome at Old Warden in Bedfordshire. This book, written by the Collection’s pilots, past and present, puts the reader in the cockpits of these amazing machines as they fly over the English countryside.

The new edition is 208 pages. It is available in Hardcover and Kindle formats.

Extremely Rare 1/16 Aero Graphics Sopwith Camel Kit Offered For Sale

Readers who are familiar with our YouTube channel DX Modelworks will no doubt remember the build log for the Aero Graphics Sopwith Camel, which is (to date), the most popular video on the channel. This is a superb balsa model designed by Dave Causer in 1/16 scale. Now discontinued, the kit is extremely rare and difficult to find – however an example is currently available for bidding on eBay. The listing states:

Lovely model kit of the Sopwith Camel which builds into a very scale flying model, perfect for the indoor flying season. Kit includes laser cut parts and covering tissue. The vac formed cowel is undamaged and the decals are in perfect condition all parts are present and still bagged.

Aeronaut Releases Second Volume on German WW1 Aircraft in Polish Service

Aeronaut Books recently released Mateusz Kabatek’s second volume on German aircraft in Polish service during WW1.

German Aircraft in Polish Service Volume 2 continues the series with a detailed look at the Albatros C.XII, C.XV, and J.I reconnaissance and infantry aircraft, as well as the Friedrichshafen G.III and Gotha G.IV bombers used by the Polish air service after WWI. Based on previously unpublished archival sources, this volume reconstructs the operational history of these aircraft in the turbulent early years of Polish independence… it reveals how German designs were adapted to local needs and used in conflicts against Ukraine and Soviet Russia.

The new title is illustrated with over 110 rare photos and 15 color profiles across its 97 pages. It follows Volume 1 which focuses on the Halberstadt CL.II, CL.IV, & C.V; LVG C.VI and Hannover CL.V.

Aeronaut Releases 25th Volume in “Lavish” Account of Blue Max Airmen

Aeronaut Books recently released volume 25 of the Blue Max Airmen series by Lance Bronnenkant, which tells “the real story” of the German airmen awarded the Pour le Mérite during the Great War. The series is described as…

…the most detailed and graphically lavish account of these heroes ever produced, covering the men in context with the war’s chronology of events. For each recipient a comprehensive, well-illustrated biography of the man is given, together with photos of the aircraft he flew, followed by details of his service, including other awards won. Color profiles of the aircraft are also provided for interest to enthusiasts and as references for modelers.

The newly released 25th volume covers fighter aces Thom, Bäumer, Neckel, and Degelow and includes 150 photographs and 19 color profiles of aircraft flown by these men in its 145 pages.
