Sopwith Camel Goes on Display at Pima Air & Space Museum

This week Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona placed their new Sopwith Camel on display.

The reproduction was originally constructed in Europe by John Shaw utilizing original drawings. A flight test was conducted in September 2017 which saw the machine reach roughly 150 ft before its original Clerget rotary engine “coughed and stopped,” resulting in a “heavy landing.” Thankfully Shaw escaped the incident, but the Camel suffered significant damage.

It was acquired by Pima in 2018 and restored for static display wearing the colors of a
Camel flown by Lt. Alfred John Haines of 45 Squadron in late 1918. It is again fitted with an original Clerget from the Pima collection.

“The Spitfire with Nine Lives” Chronicles the Enthralling History of Mk IX TE566

Coming soon from Grub Street Publishing and author Air Marshal G.A. ‘Black’ Robertson is The Spitfire with Nine Lives: The Enthralling Tale of TE566, Wrecked, Rescued and Rebuilt to Fly Again

Shortly after TE566 was delivered to the RAF, it was one of several Spitfires gifted to Czechoslovakia at the end of the Second World War. Sold to Israel in 1948 and later left to rot in a kibbutz as a children’s plaything, it was rescued, recovered to England and lovingly restored. A new life on the display circuit and on film began in 1992, first in the UK and later in South Africa, where it was all but destroyed in 2002 in a fatal accident. The wreckage was bought, returned to England, then sold to an Australian aviation training institute which eventually sold it back to the previous owner. After passing through several pairs of hands, the aircraft was rebuilt once again by Colin Wills and Tom Gilbert and converted to a two-seater to fly once more. 1939 Fleet 16B Airframe Project For Sale: “Current Registration”

A 1939 Fleet 16B airframe project has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

I purchased this airplane from Brian Coughlin, who is no longer with us. I have paperwork, a data plate plus a spare from another ship. It’s registration is current. I have no logbooks or history. It needs all 6 wing spars, though it does have John Barker ribs and enough good originals to complete the wings. It’s missing the engine (Kinner R56), brakes, flying wires, and the adjustable cabane strut. I’m into the project for well over $16k, that being said, I’ve been at this long enough to know the reality, make me an offer! Will also consider trade for small bore Continental inventory.

Spitfire Mk IXe SL633 For Sale: “Licensed and in Annual”

Newly listed for sale is Spitfire Mk IXe SL633 (VH-RAF). The aircraft was restored by Historic Flying/Aircraft Restoration Company (ARCo) UK, circa 2007 – 2010 and has 134.9 hrs total time since restoration / 6.6 hrs since IRAN in 2024. It is powered by a RR Packard Merlin 266 with 28.1 hrs SMOH by Vintage V-12s / 6.6 hrs since IRAN 2024 by Vintage V-12s, CA, USA.

Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk. IXe. The identities of this particular aircraft have included: SL633 (British Royal Air Force), DU-K and JT-10 (Free Czechoslovak Air Force), 20-42 (Israeli Air Force), and UB-425 (Myanmar Air Force which was originally formed as the “Burmese Air Force”). It was one of the last Spitfires produced via the Vickers Supermarine plant at Castle Bromwich, England… During July of 2023, SL633 suffered minor damage during a landing, roll-out accident in Washington State, USA. The Spitfire was subsequently sold and exported to Australia, where an IRAN and return to Airworthiness was carried-out by its current owner. SL633 was then placed on the Australian CASA Register as VH-RAF and remains airworthy.

See What the New England Air Museum Looked Like in 1992 [Video]

Our YouTube channel DX Modelworks has taken a break from model aircraft build logs to bring you a new video showing what the New England Air Museum looked like in 1992.

The brief video tour provides general views, close-ups of aircraft such as the F6F Hellcat and the Fokker Dr.1, and a look at the models on display. It is a wonderful time capsule that shows how the museum has evolved over the years, and it also evokes nostalgia for those who visited during this period.

Flying Shuttleworth Aircraft: New Edition of “From Bleriot to Spitfire” Released in US

Recently released in the US is the latest edition of From Bleriot to Spitfire: Flying the Historic Planes of the Shuttleworth Collection by Scott Butler.

The aeroplanes of the Shuttleworth Collection span the first 40 years of aviation from the 1909 Blériot to the late 1940s; these rare and often unique machines are still regularly flown and displayed over the aerodrome at Old Warden in Bedfordshire. This book, written by the Collection’s pilots, past and present, puts the reader in the cockpits of these amazing machines as they fly over the English countryside.

The new edition is 208 pages. It is available in Hardcover and Kindle formats.
