DC-3’s Epic Milestone: 90 Glorious Years Soars Onto US Shelves!

Fonthill will soon release The Douglas DC-3: 90 Glorious Years, author Geoff Jones’ comprehensive history of the Douglas DC-3, exploring its military, commercial, and enduring global legacy.

In Douglas DC-3: 90 Glorious Years, Geoff Jones explores the rich history of the aircraft from its beginnings in Southern California in the 1930s, to its participation in military operations such as the D-Day Normandy Landings, through to its use as a commercial aircraft into the twenty-first century. The Airbus and Boeing operators of today have their DC-3 operations to thank for their current success, and numerous enthusiast organisations continue to keep DC-3s airworthy and fly them for their members. Ninety years on, the legacy of this extraordinary aircraft is as strong as ever.

The 176 page paperback is currently available for pre-order with release slated for January 15.

Dakotas Unleashed: 46 Group’s D-Day to VE Day Heroics Detailed in New Book

In his newly released book Dakota Squadrons in Action From D-Day to V.E. Day: Airborne, Support and Supply Operations in the Liberation of Europe, author Clive Bennett provides “a microscopic examination of No. 46 Group’s flight operations, day by day, squadron by squadron, often down to crew names and takeoff/landing times.”

RAF Transport Command’s 46 Group, formed in January 1944 and operating Douglas C-47 Dakotas from RAF Broadwell, Blakehill Farm, and Down Ampney, provided critical airborne support, resupply, and casualty evacuation during WWII’s final phase. From D-Day on June 6, 1944, its squadrons delivered troops, paratroopers, and gliders over France, with WAAF ‘Flying Nightingales’ nurses aiding wounded on return flights—though LACW Margaret Campbell died in an October 1944 crash. During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, they conducted daily resupplies, earning Flight Lieutenant David Lord a posthumous Victoria Cross for bravery under flak, and in March 1945’s Operation Varsity, they enabled the war’s last major airborne assault, significantly aiding the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Aeroplane Heaven Releases Major Update on Upcoming C-47 / DC-3

Aeroplane Heaven has published a major update on their upcoming C-47/DC-3 for P3DV4.4+.

According to the announcement, the offering will include exterior models for the C-47 Skytrain (with droppable paratroops) and DC-3 (P&W engines, left passenger door; DC-3 P&W engines, cargo/passenger doors; Wright Cyclone engines, right passenger door). 1944 DC-3 S/N 26133 (N211GB) has hit the market. The listing states (in part):

This aircraft is currently available as-is without engines and props. It was purchased to be used for a children’s program and is currently in a small field. The airframe is in great shape with all radios and instruments. Engines and props are available and negotiable.

The aircraft reportedly has a total time of 23479. Although currently being offered as-is, the listing states that Restored Aircraft “will be happy to return the aircraft to service with a fresh annual inspection and customized to your specifications.” Available engines are described as PW 1830-90D types with 464.2 TSO and 593.4 TSO.

Aeroplane Heaven Shares Update on Upcoming C-47 for P3DV4.4+

Flight simulation developer Aeroplane Heaven has shared an update on their upcoming Douglas C-47 for P3DV4.4+.

As previously reported, the product is touted as “the most detailed, Hi-Definition models of this aeroplane ever produced” and will focus on the historic C-47 “That’s all Brother,” which led the armada of Skytrains across the English Channel to Normandy on June 6, 1944 (C-47 Military and DC3 Dakota civilian versions with a wide choice of liveries will reportedly be included).

The new update provides a selection of WIP screenshots, including the re-built P&W “Twin-Wasps” in their cowlings and extended tropical filters. The team also notes that flight testing has begun, with tweaking underway on PBR effects inside and out.

On June 6, the 75th anniversary of D-Day, flight simulation developer Aeroplane Heaven announced an upcoming Douglas C-47 for P3DV4.4+ which will focus on “That’s all Brother” – the C-47 that led the armada of Skytrains across the English Channel to Normandy on June 6, 1944.

“Complete” DC-3/C-47 Airframe Project Offered For Sale

No engines, but feather tip props, engine mounts, and cowlings are included. Airplane is complete other than the engines with additional spare parts. Serial No. 20190, Former registration N95460. TTAF 26256 hrs. Airframe has been rebuilt once, Complete logs, manuals and x-rays. Has been on a 121 cert. in the past. Payloader configuration. Has been Alaska airplane 40 plus years, no corrosion.

C-47 / DC-3 Cockpit / Nose Section Offered For Sale

The cockpit section of C-47 / DC-3 N87T has hit the market.

According to the listing, the aircraft was still actively flying cargo in the Caribbean as late as 2010 as part of the old Four Star fleet. It was rescued from San Juan, Puerto Rico four years ago and is described as “a shell.”

The cockpit / nose section has the rudder pedals, windshield, side glass, .flooring, walls, ceiling are all still intact. but most has been removed as you can see from the pictures. Instruments and seats, yoke and instrument panel have been removed …BUT instruments and seats and instrument panel are available on-line. You can still get everything you need on line, e.g. Facebook Groups are excellent sources for parts.

The nose section/cockpit is mounted and secured in a padded wooden saddle which is secured to a snowmobile trailer.. ready for easy transport…down the road or onto to a ship for transport.

“Released from military service 1958 and transferred to the FAA; Transferred from FAA to the USDA in 1966; Transferred from the USDA to the County of Monroe, FL (Date unknown); Released from Government service and transferred to Howe Enterprises 1998; Transferred from Howe Enterprises to Heartland Air Museum 2012; Transferred from Heartland Air Museum to current owner California Machinery Services, Inc. 2016”
