LEGO to Release Large Pan-Am DC-3 Model With Impressive Details

LEGO is preparing to release a new Douglas DC-3 building set in Pan-Am colors.

The new set (#11378) includes four minifigures (pilot, purser, stewardess and flight attendant) wearing historical Pan-Am uniforms, a detailed cockpit and passenger cabin, retractable landing gear, as well as a model display stand with an information plaque and a Pan Am-branded minifigure display stand. Fuselage sections can be removed to view interior details.

The model consists of 1,903 pieces and measures 9.5 in. (24 cm) high, 20 in. (51 cm) long, and 30 in. (76 cm) wide (including stand). It is currently slated for release in early April. Click below to check out additional images.

In Douglas DC-3: 90 Glorious Years, Geoff Jones explores the rich history of the aircraft from its beginnings in Southern California in the 1930s, to its participation in military operations such as the D-Day Normandy Landings, through to its use as a commercial aircraft into the twenty-first century. The Airbus and Boeing operators of today have their DC-3 operations to thank for their current success, and numerous enthusiast organisations continue to keep DC-3s airworthy and fly them for their members. Ninety years on, the legacy of this extraordinary aircraft is as strong as ever.

The 176 page paperback is currently available for pre-order with release slated for January 15.

For Sale With Reduced Price: DC-3A With Airframe Spares, Extra Engine

1940 Douglas DC-3A S/N 2239 (N28AA) is available for sale with a newly reduced price.

It was the fifth DC-3A delivered to Braniff Airways in 1940 as N25666. In April 1953 the aircraft was sold to Trans Texas Airways who operated it for the next 15 years. It then flew with various airlines including Eastern Express Airlines, a subsidiary of Eastern Airlines. It was eventually acquired by the late Ron Alexander, who performed an overhaul of the machine, installing a new passenger interior and applying the polished / painted finish. It was sold to the current owner in 2017.

The airframe reportedly has 83,025 TTSN while the two Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines have 930 and 1479 SMOH. It includes an avionics package, “numerous airframe spares,” and a spare R-1830 engine w/ 650 hrs SMOH.​

1940 Douglas DC-3A S/N 2239 (N28AA) has hit the market.

A “one of a kind, corporate configured” Douglas DC-3 (S/N 34378 / NC33611) is available for sale. The listing states (in part):

One of a kind corporate configured 1945 Douglas DC-3. S/N 34378 is the former transport of the Columbia Broadcasting System, Outboard and Marine Manufacturing and EAA. Low total time with only 17,896 hours. This DC-3 was the last of its model to operate carrying passengers for a Part 121 Air Carrier on the US registry and also has a number of historic aviation figures in its logbook such as Paul Poberezney and Jimmy Leeward to name a few. S/N 34378 was the cover for Flying Magazine in August 1981 and AOPA Magazine in December 2016. This is a rare turn-key opportunity to purchase an exceptionally cared for DC-3 with spare parts and support equipment.

The aircraft is reportedly powered by Pratt & Whitney R1830-94 engines with 152 and 920 SMOH by Anderson Aero Engines in 2013. The machine is located in Virginia with pricing available upon request. Click here to check out the complete listing.

1942 DC-3/C-49K Airframe Project With WW2 Service Offered For Sale

A 1942 Douglas DC-3 / C-49K airframe project is available for sale.

Aircraft was built as a DC3 before the war, then modified as a C-49K and impressed into service. After the war she served with multiple passenger airlines. In 1956 she was converted into an executive transport role (we have the layout). Her most recent iteration was a cargo role.

According to the listing, the aircraft served as part of Air Transport Command during WW2, being sent to Morrison Field in West Palm Beach Florida for use in the 27th AAF Ferrying Wing. It reportedly flew in the D-Day 50th anniversary flight but was damaged by a tornado in 2008, having sat ever since. 1944 DC-3 S/N 26133 (N211GB) has hit the market. The listing states (in part):

This aircraft is currently available as-is without engines and props. It was purchased to be used for a children’s program and is currently in a small field. The airframe is in great shape with all radios and instruments. Engines and props are available and negotiable.

The aircraft reportedly has a total time of 23479. Although currently being offered as-is, the listing states that Restored Aircraft “will be happy to return the aircraft to service with a fresh annual inspection and customized to your specifications.” Available engines are described as PW 1830-90D types with 464.2 TSO and 593.4 TSO.

A DC-3C / C-47 project has hit the market. The listing states (in part):

No engines, but feather tip props, engine mounts, and cowlings are included. Airplane is complete other than the engines with additional spare parts. Serial No. 20190, Former registration N95460. TTAF 26256 hrs. Airframe has been rebuilt once, Complete logs, manuals and x-rays. Has been on a 121 cert. in the past. Payloader configuration. Has been Alaska airplane 40 plus years, no corrosion.

C-47 / DC-3 Cockpit / Nose Section Offered For Sale

The cockpit section of C-47 / DC-3 N87T has hit the market.

According to the listing, the aircraft was still actively flying cargo in the Caribbean as late as 2010 as part of the old Four Star fleet. It was rescued from San Juan, Puerto Rico four years ago and is described as “a shell.”

The cockpit / nose section has the rudder pedals, windshield, side glass, .flooring, walls, ceiling are all still intact. but most has been removed as you can see from the pictures. Instruments and seats, yoke and instrument panel have been removed …BUT instruments and seats and instrument panel are available on-line. You can still get everything you need on line, e.g. Facebook Groups are excellent sources for parts.

The nose section/cockpit is mounted and secured in a padded wooden saddle which is secured to a snowmobile trailer.. ready for easy transport…down the road or onto to a ship for transport.
