Eduard Releases New, Limited Edition PBY-5A Catalina

Eduard has released a new, limited edition PBY-5A Catalina in 1/48 scale.

The PBY-5A Catalina was the amphibious version of Consolidated’s famous WWII patrol bomber, designed to operate from both water and land with exceptional range and endurance. It became a workhorse for anti-submarine patrols, convoy escort, search and rescue, and night attack missions, and its versatility made it one of the most important Allied aircraft of the war. The Catalinas in service with the USAAF were designated OA-10A.

The new release (11198) features Revell plastic parts, pre-painted PE parts, painting masks, resin parts (wheels, exhausts and antennas) and Eduard decals with marking options for five aircraft.

Eduard to Release Limited Edition PBY-5A Kit With Resin Upgrades

Eduard has announced the upcoming release of a limited edition PBY-5A Catalina model kit in 1/48 scale.

The PBY-5A was used as an amphibious patrol bomber in WW2 and was known for its long range, endurance, and versatility in roles like submarine hunting, convoy escort, search-and-rescue, and night attack. It was one of the most important Allied maritime aircraft of the war and could operate from both water and land thanks to its retractable landing gear.

The upcoming release will include Revell plastic parts, PE parts, five marking options and resin upgrades including wheels, exhausts, and antenna mounts. It is currently slated for release in July. Click below to check out livery profiles.

Catalina Flying Boat: The Complete Operational History in Australian Service

Coming soon from Avonmore Books and author Don Williams is The Catalina Flying Boat in Australian Service During WWII, a “full color, fully illustrated, complete operational history of the Catalina in Australian service during WWII, during which 225 airmen lost their lives.”

The RAAF effort during the Pacific War was massive, with glamorous types such as Spitfires, P-40s, Beaufighters and Hudsons grabbing most of the attention. While the ungainly Catalina flying boat played an equally important frontline role in the conflict, its contribution remains largely unheralded. Catalinas had unique characteristics and were in the combat zone from the first day of the war to the last, serving in several key roles. From the earliest desperate weeks of the Pacific War, RAAF Catalinas serving as bombers were one of the few Allied types with the range to strike the key Japanese base of Rabaul. Catalinas also monitored the enemy advance up to the Battle of the Coral Sea and paid a heavy price at the hands of Japanese fighters. From 1943 the Catalina force began expanding, and eventually 168 of the flying boats were received by the RAAF. These made a major strategic contribution to the war over the next two years, undertaking a successful minelaying campaign that ranged throughout the Netherlands East Indies and beyond as far as the Chinese coast. Catalinas also provided the RAAF with a valuable air-sea rescue capability, while others serving with Qantas maintained what was the longest regular airline route in the world between Perth and Ceylon.

The 132 page paperback publication is currently available for pre-order with release set for June 1.

A Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina (S/N 48423 / N423RS) with “many spare parts” has hit the market. The listing states (in part):

Standard WWII military configuration. Seats removed other than radio operator position. In fair condition. Flight deck is in fair condition… Aircraft has been in storage after shipment to Florida from UK. There are spares with the project including tail component, rudders, props, main wings, struts, cowls.

The airframe reportedly has 12049.2 TT, while the Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92S engines each have 650 SOH. The machine is located in New Smyrna, FL and is currently being offered for US $275,000. Click here to check out the complete listing.

1945 Consolidated Vultee PBY-6A Catalina N4NC Offered For Sale

1945 Consolidated Vultee 28-5ACF – PBY-6A Catalina S/N 46662 (N4NC) has hit the market. The airframe reportedly has 4115 TTSN (836.3 Hrs. since restoration) while the two Pratt & Whitney R-1830-94 engines have 12.1 and 23.9 SMOH.

The machine is painted in U.S. Navy markings of 75th Anniversary of NC4 Flight and is described as being in “good condition” with a “huge selection of spares, many NOS are available.”

Consolidated Vultee PBY-5A Catalina N9505C (S/N 34027) has hit the market with a new, reduced price.

The aircraft, which was reportedly used in the movie Always, was modified to a Super Cat configuration with Wright R-2600 engines. The airframe is said to have amassed a total time of 4,667 hrs since new, while the engines have 464 and 890 hrs SMOH. The Hamilton Standard 23E50 props are described as having 699 and 822 hrs SMOH.

The machine lacks avionics and is reportedly in need of restoration, although it “could be made ferriable.” It reportedly includes original logs since its delivery to the military in 1943.

Stranded PBY Catalina Nearly Ready for Return to Flight

Following an emergency landing and three-month grounding, the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s (HARS) PBY-6A Catalina (A24-362/VH-PBZ) is nearly ready to return to the air.

The machine was en route to the Rathmines Catalina Festival back in October when it developed engine trouble and landed at Maitland Airport in New South Wales, where it has remained ever since. Major progress toward a return to flight was made earlier this week when a rebuilt Pratt & Whitney R1830 engine was delivered to the site from the machine’s home base at Ablion Park.

The engine has since been installed and test runs are planned for Wednesday. If all goes well, a test flight will follow and the team will return on a weekend to fly it home. Continue reading Stranded PBY Catalina Nearly Ready for Return to Flight
