Thomas-Morse Scout’s First Post-Restoration Flight Captured in New Video

The first post-restoration flight of Ithaca Aviation Heritage Foundation’s newly restored, Le Rhone-powered Thomas-Morse S-4B has been captured in a newly released video.

As previously reported, The Ithaca, NY-based organization was established in order to return an example of the WW1 advanced trainer to the city where it was originally manufactured as “a symbol of Ithaca’s aviation heritage.” Their machine was generously donated by Dr. William N. Thibault of San Diego, CA in 2010 and received a meticulous restoration prior to the September 29th flight.

Siddeley Puma-Powered DH.9 E8894 Performs Initial Engine Test [Video]

On October 19, The Historic Aircraft Collection’s newly restored de Havilland DH.9 E8894/G-CDLI performed its initial engine test at Duxford.

The aircraft is one of two DH.9s discovered in an elephant stable in India and restored by Guy Black’s Retrotec workshop in East Sussex, England. While the first example (D-5649) was rebuilt for static display at the Imperial War Museum, this second DH.9 was restored to airworthy status and is powered by the only airworthy Siddeley Puma engine in the world.

The machine is reportedly undergoing ground runs for CAA paperwork. At the moment, a time frame for flight testing has not yet been announced. Click below to check out a video of Friday’s test.

New Video Captures C-53 “Beach City Baby” Returning to the Air for the First Time in 25 Years

On October 6, C-53 Skytrooper “Beach City Baby” returned to the air for the fist time in 25 years following over two years of work.

The aircraft (S/N 41-20095) was constructed by Douglas and was on the factory floor when the Pearl Harbor attack occurred in December 1941. It was delivered to the USAAC in January 1942 and was soon flown to Africa to participate in Operation Torch. The machine also saw service transporting troops and VIPs during the war and completed its service with FEA, Cairo Division.

Following civilian service with Danish Airlines/SAS and a stint as “Buckeye One,” the official state aircraft for the governor of Ohio, the Skytrooper was retired and flown to the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio where it remained until 1990, when it was acquired by Ohio University of Athens and stripped of its engines. Eventually Ken Joseph stepped in and returned it to an airworthy state, obtaining a ferry permit and flying it to Beach City, Ohio in 1992. Time-Lapse Video Captures Work on USAF Museum’s Avro 504 Restoration

The USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio is currently in the process of restoring their Avro 504K and recently released a time-lapse video detailing the process of removing fabric from the machine’s fuselage.

As previously reported, this particular example of the famous WW1 British trainer was originally constructed by the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Aircraft Maintenance & Development Unit in 1966-67 using original parts, including a 110 hp Le Rhone rotary engine. It arrived at the USAF Museum in 2003 and has since been on display in its Early Years Gallery wearing the colors of an aerobatic trainer of AEF No. 3 Instruction Center, based at Issoudun, France in 1918.

The next steps will include cleaning the airframe structure and engine and replacing the fabric with a period correct linen.

Impressive Airfix B-17G Build Detailed in Stop Motion [Video]

Modeler extraordinaire Tom Grigat is back with a new stop motion animation video detailing his construction of Airfix’s 1/72 B-17G model kit.

The build included aftermarket parts from CMK (Special Hobby) and also saw Tom simulating “stressed skin” for the first time, although he reports that he ran into some issues, stating that he “scratched to hard into the surface and the effect might be a bit too strong.”

The machine’s metallic surfaces are simulated using several paints from alclad II (accentuated with metal powder from Uschi van der Rosten) while engine detail and antennas saw the use of material from Albion Alloys.

Newly Restored Albatros D.Va Performs First Engine Test [Video]

Yesterday, the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust’s newly restored Albatros D.Va (G-WAHT) performed its first engine test at the Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire, UK.

As previously reported, the reproduction, formerly ZK-TGY, was a regular performer on the UK Airshow Circuit in 2015-2016 and was originally constructed by The Vintage Aviator Ltd. of New Zealand, which also carried out the recent work. As seen above, it initially appeared in the colors of the machine flown by Paul Baumer of Jasta 5, however it has been repainted to represent D.2263, flown by Otto Kissenbert of Royal Bavarian Jasta 23b.

The Albatros arrived at The Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire, UK last month where it underwent reassembly. It is expected to remain at the location until the process of obtaining a flight permit is complete. Click below to check out a video of yesterday’s test.

De Havilliand Mosquito HJ711 Performs Successful Engine Test in Lincolnshire [Video]

On September 19, Tony Agar’s de Havilland Mosquito NF.II HJ711 performed a successful run of its port engine at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre.

As previously reported, the aircraft was built at Hatfield in 1943 and went on to serve with 141 and 169 Squadrons, scoring the latter’s first kill on January 30, 1944 when pilot Squadron Leader J.A.H. Cooper downed a Bf 110 over Berlin. Following the war, HJ711’s forward fuselage was transferred to RAF Air Training Command at Chingsford before the nose section resurfaced at the Reflectaire Museum in Blackpool. Agar acquired the remains in 1971 and began a long term restoration to taxiing condition using components of PF498, VA878, NT616, and RS715.

The machine spent many years at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington, York before the decision was made to relocate it to Lincolnshire, which has additional facilities available to complete restoration work.
