Eduard Releases New Tool, Dual Combo Sopwith Camel Kit

Eduard has released a new tool, dual combo Sopwith Camel model kit in 1/48 scale.

The limited edition offering, dubbed “Camel & Co.” (11151) includes Eduard plastic parts for two aircraft as well as pre-painted photo-etched details and a painting mask. Eduard decals with ten marking options (including two fictional Biggles liveries) are also included:

Full-Scale Airdrome Aeroplanes Sopwith Camel Offered For Sale

A full-scale Airdrome Aeroplanes Sopwith Camel reproduction which is “currently being test flown” is available for sale. The listing states (in part):

I have decided to list the plane for sale due to work commitments as I will no longer have the time nor commitment to complete the remainder of the test flying phase or sort out any associated issues as they arise. I am hoping that the aircraft will be purchased by someone or a small group of enthusiast that can put in the time that I don’t have.

Listed below are the issues that need to addressed before the final test flying phase can be completed: (a) Prop needs approximately 1.5 inches taken off the tips to increase maximum RPM to 3000/3100 as recommended by Rotec, its currently only achieving 2750RPM in straight and level at full noise. (b) Oil temp not working (could be a faulty sender unit?). (c) Oil temp probe needs changing from tank to return line to get more accurate reading (this should fix dot point B). (d) Tail plane needs a slight shim adjustment as it requires slight forward pressure on the stick to maintain level flight. (e) Cooling ventilation to back of engine needs redesigning to eliminate any fuel vaporisation issues.

The description reports that the machine is powered by a 150 hp nine-cylinder Rotec R3600 radial engine spinning a 90″culver wooden propeller. It is currently registered under RAAus 19-2137 and wears colors representing the machine flown by WW1 Canadian Ace Donald MacLaren. Watch the Stop Motion Assembly of a 1/16 Sopwith Camel [Video]

The latest stop motion video from modeler extraordinaire Tom Grigat features construction of Artesanía Latina’s Sopwith Camel structure model in 1/16 scale.

Grigat had previously constructed the company’s Fokker Dr.1 and noted that the Camel kit, which consists of approximately 750 pieces of metal and wood, is “not as easy to build.” Despite this, he states that the process is “well guided,” with the kit offering step-by-step instructions with video tutorials and more than 600 photos.

“No Expense Spared” Full Scale Sopwith Camel Reproduction Offered For Sale

A full-scale Sopwith Camel reproduction has hit the market. The listing states:

For sale is my full scale replica of a 1918 WWI Sopwith Camel fighter. This aircraft is currently under going flight testing and is one of only two Camels known to be flying in Australia. No expense has been spared on this build which has taken over 3 x years to complete, paint scheme is based on the famous WW1 Canadian camel ace Donald McLaren, engine is a brand new 150hp 9 x cylinder Rotec radial fitted with a 90″ wooden culver prop and comes complete with replica Vickers machine guns and a cane wicker seat, this would have to be one of the closest replica’s of this famous British WW1 fighter in Australia.

Airworthy, Full-Scale Fokker Dr.1, Sopwith Camel and 80% Albatros D.Va Offered For Sale

Full-scale, airworthy reproductions of the legendary Fokker Dr.1 and Sopwith Camel have hit the market, along with an 80% scale example of the Albatros D.Va.

The Dr.1 was reportedly built from Ron Sands plans and is powered by a Lycoming O-320 engine. The airframe is said to have amassed a total time of 294 hours total time, while the engine has 294 hours SMOH. The machine, which is described as US registered and currently flying in Florida, is being offered for $110,000, although offers are also being accepted. The Camel was reportedly constructed in 1993 and is powered by a Warner Super Scarab radial engine. It is described as having new exhaust, starter, brakes, tailwheel steering and radio and is flown regularly off pavement and grass. Watch Shuttleworth’s New Sopwith Camel Perform Its Debut Display [Video]

On May 6, the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire held their Season Premiere / RAF Centennial airshow – an event that saw the display debut of their new Sopwith Camel reproduction.

The Clerget-powered aircraft was built from original drawings by Northern Aeroplane Workshops in Batley before being transported to Old Warden, where it was covered and assembled by the Shuttleworth team. The machine wears the colors of D1851, “Ikanopit”, a Ruston Proctor-built Camel that operated with 70 Squadron RAF in 1918.

The aircraft performed its maiden flight in May 2017, becoming the fourth Sopwith type based at the museum (others include a Pup, Triplane and Dove).

The historic flight, performed by Chief Pilot Dodge Bailey, can be seen below, along with footage of a training week flight from April.

Udvar-Hazy to Host British Warbird Fly-In Commemorating RAF Centennial

In order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia will be hosting a fly-in featuring a number of British warbirds.

“The Great British Fly-In” will reportedly feature more than ten former RAF aircraft that are either currently on display at the museum or will be flown in for one-day-only event. In addition to Spitfires, a B-25 Mitchell and a P-51 Mustang, the fly-in will feature talks by RAF officers and museum experts, presentations about the museum’s newly acquired Sopwith Camel (featured in The Flying Machine #6), interactive STEM demonstrations and performances from the RAF Band and drill displays from the Queens Colour Squadron.

The event is currently scheduled to take place at the museum on April 15th from 10am-4pm. Admission is free, although parking will cost $15. Click here for additional information.
