New Book Shares WW2 RAF Bomber Command History “In Rich Detail With Previously Unpublished Photos”

In his new book RAF Bomber Command: ‘Strike Hard, Strike Sure’ 1936-1945 author Ron Mackay documents “the painfully protracted but ultimately successful raising of a mighty aerial strike force that crippled the Third Reich’s industrial capacity.”

From 1939 to 1942, Bomber Command was very weak in terms of human and material losses. The navigational means with which to accurately guide bombers to targets was almost completely lacking while the enemy defensive network inflicted serious casualties. Consequently, the punishment handed out was minimal. The resurgence of Bomber Command’s fortunes coincided with the appointment of Sir Arthur Harris. The advent of four-engine designs such as the Avro Lancaster and Handley Page Halifax ensured that a greatly increased bomb tonnage could be delivered. Also, electronic aids such as Gee, Oboe and H2S simplified the task in finding targets. Therefore, by 1944-1945, the RAF’s bombers pulverised Hitler’s Third Reich. Although flak and night-fighters took a heavy toll on the bombers, the RAF’s nocturnal offensive in conjunction with the USAAF’s daylight assaults crippled Germany’s ability to fight back.

The 556 page title is described as “historically rich in detail” and boasts “previously unpublished photographs from private archives.”

Now Available: Lightning Down: A World War II Story of Survival

In his new book Lightning Down: A World War II Story of Survival NY Times bestselling author author Tom Clavin shares a “can’t-put-it-down inspiring saga of brave men confronting great evil and great odds against survival.”

On August 13, 1944, Joe Moser set off on his forty-fourth combat mission over occupied France. Soon, he would join almost 170 other Allied airmen as prisoners in Buchenwald, one of the most notorious and deadly of Nazi concentration camps. Tom Clavin’s Lightning Down tells this largely untold and riveting true story.

Moser was just twenty-two years old, a farm boy from Washington State who fell in love with flying. During the War he realized his dream of piloting a P-38 Lightning, one of the most effective weapons the Army Air Corps had against the powerful German Luftwaffe. But on that hot August morning he had to bail out of his damaged, burning plane. Captured immediately, Moser’s journey into hell began. New Book Offers “Comprehensively-Illustrated, In-Depth Operational History” of 619 Squadron in WW2

Chris Ward continues his series on Bomber Command Squadron Profiles with his new book 619 Squadron, which is described as a “comprehensively-illustrated, in-depth operational history of this fine unit.”

The squadron was formed at Woodhall Spa in April 1943 under the banner of 5 Group, and it would serve as a standard “squadron of the line”, beginning operations in June 1943, during the most intense weeks of the five-month-long Ruhr offensive. From that point on, the squadron took part in all the main bombing campaigns, including the devastating four-raid series against Hamburg under Operation Gomorrah at the end of July. The squadron then participated in attacks against Italy, Peenemünde and the start of the Berlin offensive in August. Autumn saw the crippling attacks on Hannover, Mannheim and Kassel in September and October, followed by the main Winter Offensive from November 1943 to the end of March 1944, including the sixteen further raids on Berlin… 619 Squadron ended the war with a fine record of service, having made a telling contribution to Bomber Command’s part in the ultimate victory.

The paperback title spans 229 pages and measures 8.5 x 0.52 x 11 inches.

“Profusely Illustrated” New Book Documents 42 of Japan’s Advanced WW2 Fighters

Fonthill Media and bestselling author Justo Miranda have released the new title Fighters of the Dying Sun which is described as “a previously unpublished compilation of forty-two advanced fighters developed in Japan during the Second World War.”

The first B-29 flew over Tokyo on 1 November 1944. It was a photographic reconnaissance aircraft ironically named ‘Tokyo Rose.’ The Ki.44 fighters of the 47th Sentai took off to intercept it but as it turned out the Superfortress flew at such an altitude and speed that they could not reach it. The Ki-44-II-Otsu had been specifically designed for this type of interception and could reach the astonishing rate of climb of 5,000 m in four minutes; however it was not good enough. During the following ten months, a devastating bombing campaign of thousands of Superfortresses destroyed 67 Japanese cities and half of Tokyo.
