Newly Restored XP-82 Twin Mustang Performs First Flight

Yesterday, newly restored XP-82 Twin Mustang S/N 44-83887 (seen above) returned to the air for the first time since December 14, 1949.

As previously reported, the F-82 long-range escort fighter was designed late in WW2 and became the last propeller-driven fighter produced in quantity for the U.S. Air Force. Tom Reilly of Douglas, Georgia acquired the XP-82 prototype from Walter and Margaret Soplata in 2008 and restoration to airworthy condition began that July at Douglas Municipal Airport. Additional F-82 parts were sourced from Alaska and Colorado and a rare, left-hand turning Allison V-12 was located in Mexico. Additional components, including full second cockpit controls and a second canopy (one that “is completely different from any P-51 type”) were sourced from San Francisco and Tampa, respectively.

“Nearly 100% Complete” TF-104G Starfighter Project Offered For Sale

A Lockheed TF-104G Starfighter project has hit the market.

The aircraft (S/N D-5810) is described as a two seat training model manufactured in 1963 which spent its entire career in service with the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) until retirement in 1984. The listing states (in part):

The project includes what is believed to be a “0” time General Electric J-79-11F (no logs) and afterburner (in container). The engine was removed from the storage container and run up on a test stand to approximately 80% power in 2016. The project includes an extensive spare parts inventory which includes a brand-new set of wings. The aircraft is nearly 100% complete and in stock military condition with the exception of the clocks and stop watches.

The machine has reportedly received gradual restoration over the last few years and includes “a very extensive technical library,” ground support equipment, and one pair of wingtip fuel tanks / underwing pylons. Modelcollect Releases New Tool B-52H Kit, New (Early Type) B-52G to Follow

Modelcollect has released their new tool B-52H model kit in 1/72 scale.

The kit (UA72200) is touted as offering two detailed engine parts, four detailed flaps, detailed tail, 12 AGM-129 missiles and full interior details. It also includes one livery option for B-52H “SAC TIME” of 93 Bomb Squadron, 917 Wing.

The company has also announced that their new 1/72 B-52G (early type) model kit will be released “in few weeks.” The offering (UA72207) is described as “Broken Arrow 1966, with B-28 Nuclear bomb,” although additional details are scarce. However, box art and a series of renderings have been released and can be seen below.

First Look: Test Build of AFV Club’s Upcoming New Tool U-2 Dragon Lady

AFV Club has published new test build images of their upcoming U-2A Dragon Lady model kit (AR48112) in 1/48 scale.

Few details are currently available, although the series of images does provide some information regarding kit contents and livery options. ETA has been reported as January 2019.

Just Flight Releases Avro Vulcan B Mk 2 for FSX and P3D

Just Flight has released their new Avro Vulcan B Mk 2 for FSX and P3D v4.

The model was reportedly built using “real-world aircraft plans and comprehensive photography of the real aircraft (XM655)” and is said to include many detailed animations, a range of payload options, varying external parts for several configurations, Olympus 201 and 301 engine nozzle types and ground equipment.

Additional features reportedly include 4096×4096 textures to produce the highest possible texture clarity, bump and specular mapping to produce a truly 3D feel, “a truly 3D virtual cockpit” and 11 marking options.
