Extremely Rare P-38 Project Offered For Sale

An extremely rare P-38 project has hit the market.

According to the listing, the aircraft (S/N 42-104088, C/N 422-2922, N38LL, Scatterbrain Kid II) is a P-38J-15-LO that was accepted at Lockheed in Burbank, California on 8 January 1944 and assigned to the 370th Fighter Group (FG) / 9th Air Force. It was listed as “condemned salvaged” due to battle damage on 1 August 1944. Following the war it reportedly passed through the hands of several owners before it was fully restored, returning to the air in 1992. Sadly it crashed on takeoff in 1994 and was subsequently dismantled and stored.

The package consists of a damaged aircraft, many extra parts and is packed for shipping wooden crates and on pallets. The Center section of the aircraft and one tail boom have been rebuilt by West Pac in Colorado to an extremely high standard.

Italeri Releases P-38J Model Kit With Four New Liveries

Italeri has released a new P-38J boxing in 1/72 scale.

The kit is reportedly based on the Academy P-38 released in 2004 and includes new decals with marking options for four machines: “Miss Ann” of 7th FG; “BAMBI” of 55th FG, 338 FS; “Curly Six” of 367th FG, 394th FS and “T Rigor Mortis” of 421st FG.

Tamiya Releases Limited Edition P-38H Masterpiece Kit

Tamiya has released their “one shot production run” P-38H Masterpiece kit in 1/48 scale.

As previously reported, the kit (25199) offers a bevy of new parts to replicate the type, including larger supercharger intakes, rear canopy without reinforcing frames, instrumentation, nose landing gear strut and bay covers, main landing gear reinforcements, upgraded 20mm cannon and 12.7mm machine guns that were often modified on the ground, plus turbocharger coolant pipe. It also includes weights for accurate balance and display and a detailed cockpit with wheel-type controls, radio, throttle box and more.

One marking option will be included representing 432nd Fighter Squadron, part of the 475th Fighter Group that was devastatingly effective from 1943-44 over the Pacific. A canopy painting mask is also included as well as a full-color painting guide.

Tamiya has announced the upcoming release of a new P-38H Lightning model kit in 1/48 scale.

The P-38’s Full Story To Be Told in Upcoming Book

Steve Blake’s upcoming book Lightning Strikes: The Lockheed P-38 is touted as offering the “full story” of the Lockheed P-38, “one of the most successful and versatile aircraft of the Second World War.”

The book describes the Lightning’s design and its technical details as it gradually evolved and improved, from the original XP-38 to its final variant, the P-38L-5. The main focus is on its service in the combat theaters, from the frigid, windswept Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific to the steaming jungles of the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, the burning sands of North Africa and the more temperate climes of Europe. All the units that flew the Lightning are included, as are the experiences of many of their pilots and groundcrewmen as they fought the Japanese Empire and the European Axis. Also related are the P-38’s service with foreign (non-U.S.) air forces, its postwar commercial utilization as civilian aircraft and the surviving examples in museums around the world.

The 320-page book, described as “extremely well illustrated” with “over 400 high-resolution photographs, art work and graphics” as well as detailed appendices, is currently slated for release in November and is available for pre-order here ($45).

Two livery options are also included representing “White 147,” a P-38G which took part in the interception of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in April 1943, and P-38F “White 33.

Spotted For Sale: Tamiya’s New Tool P-38 “Sample Kits”

Pre-production examples of Tamiya’s upcoming, new tool P-38 F/G Lightning model kit have been spotted for sale.

As previously reported, The kit is currently slated for release on November 20, although 300 “preview kits” in sample, pre-production boxes were raffled off at the recent IPMS USA event in Tennessee.

Following a series of photographic clues earlier this week, Tamiya has confirmed the upcoming release of a new tool P-38 F/G Lightning kit in 1/48 scale.

The company has also released a number of details on the kit (61120), stating that “extensive research and ever-evolving mold making techniques” were employed to “achieve the best fitting and most accurate P-38 Lightning F/G model assembly kit to date.”

WW2 Aircraft on the Move at USAF Museum [Video]

The USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio recently moved some of its iconic WW2 warbirds back into position after they were temporarily relocated to provide room for the Memphis Belle exhibit opening back in May. These included the P-51, P-47, P-38 and A-36.

In the process, opportunities were provided to get a better look at the aircraft, resulting in a new series videos that can be seen below.
