Airfix Commemorates D-Day With New Hawker Typhoon / Eurofighter Typhoon Twin Pack

Airfix recently released a Typhoon twin pack model kit containing a Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 “Moggy” and Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib in 1/72 scale.

The offering (A40001) boasts 117 pieces and D-Day liveries for each aircraft. The Hawker Typhoon representing 1944 No.257 (Burma) Squadron and the Eurofighter Typhoon representing ZJ913 of the RAF Typhoon Display Team from the 2024 season.

The striking design on Typhoon FGR.4 ZJ913 was inspired by the RAF No.257 (Burma) Squadron Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib, piloted by Officer Denzil Jenkins during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, featuring the iconic black and white identification stripes that were a hallmark of Allied aircraft over Normandy on D-Day. This was a brilliant move by the RAF PR team, and this aircraft captivated millions during the subsequent airshow season, at commemorative events in both the UK and France, and during a successful Canadian tour.

The kits are rated as level 2 builds, making them ideal for modelers ages 8 and above.

Airscale Releases New “State of the Art” Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Hybrid Kit

Airscale has released their new 3D printed Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib “car door” in 1/32 scale.

Combining state of the art injection moulding with high end 3D parts, this hybrid kit sets the tone for future modellers. Fuselage, wings, tailplanes and clear parts are all injection moulded, while everything else bristles with finely realised 3D detail.

The model is released in partnership with Typhoon Legacy in Canada, and a percentage of sales will go toward their restoration of JP843 to flying condition. Click below for product link and additional images.

The Disappearance of R.E.P. Brooker DSO, DFC: Answering the Mystery and Controversy

Coming soon from Pen & Sword Books and author Malcolm Sutherland is A Fighter Pilot’s War: Battle of Britain, Far East, D-Day, & Germany – The Remarkable Career of Wing Commander R.E.P. Brooker DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar. The book is a detailed biography which reportedly provides the answers to the mystery and controversy surrounding Brooker’s disappearance in 1945.

Richard Edgar Peter Brooker left school and joined the RAF in 1937. He was posted to 56 Squadron and in 1940 he served for several weeks as personal assistant to Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park, before flying throughout the height of the Battle of Britain. In the spring of 1941, promoted to Acting Squadron Leader, Brooker commanded No.1 Squadron during the Blitz; for this he was awarded the D.F.C. After being posted to Singapore late in 1941, where he led Nos. 232 and 242 squadrons fighting the Japanese invasion, he was evacuated on the last flight out of Bandoeng, Java, to Australia in March 1942. For his gallantry, determination in the face of heavy odds during the fall of Singapore, Brooker was awarded a Bar to the D.F.C. In the spring of 1944, Brooker became Wing Commander Flying of 123 Wing of Hawker Typhoons at RAF Thorney Island, in preparation for the liberation of Europe. Exhausted after an intensive spell of operational flying during and after D-Day, Brooker was taken off flying in July and sent to complete the Senior Staff Officers’ course at the RAF Staff College. At this time, he was awarded the DSO. In January 1945 Brooker became Wing Commander Flying of 122 Wing operating Hawker Tempest Vs, initially in Holland and then in Germany. In this period he was awarded a Bar to his DSO – but it was an award that was made posthumously. It was from Rheine-Hopsten in Germany that Peter took off on the evening, of 16 April 1945, and failed to return, just twenty-two days from VE Day. His aircraft and his remains have never been accounted for.

First Look: Airscale Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib Test Build

Airscale has released the first test photos for their new 3D printed Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib in 1/32 scale.

The new series of images reportedly show the model assembled straight from the sprues without filler, primer or sanding. As of this writing the dates for pre-order and final release have not yet been announced.

Eduard to Release Limited Edition 1/48 Typhoon Mk.Ib Model Kit

Eduard has announced the upcoming release of a Limited Edition Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib model kit featuring a bubble canopy.

While the molds for the plastic parts originate from Hasegawa, the 1/48 scale offering (11117) will reportedly feature additional resin parts, including a large Tempest-style horizontal stabilizer and a four blade prop and spinner. The kit is also said to boast pre-colored photo etched parts, paint masks and Cartograf decals.

Six preliminary marking options have been selected, including MN819 of 245 (North Rhodesian) Squadron, MN529 184 Squadron, RB207 of 438 (RCAF) Squadron, MP197 of 245 (North Rhodesian) Squadron, SW399, 175 Squadron, and RB431 of 123 Wing.
