HK Models Announces Massive 1/32 Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Dambusters Kit

HK Models will be following up last year’s 1/32 Lancaster B Mk.I release with an upcoming 1/32 B Mk.III Dambusters model kit to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Dambusters raid.

Details on the offering (01E011) are currently scarce, although box art, images of a partially assembled model as well as a possible livery profile have been released. The profile suggests that the kit will include decals representing ED932/AJ-G of 617 Squadron.

New Video Details Progress on Airworthy Restoration of Lancaster FM104

A new video has been released providing a report on the restoration of Avro Lancaster FM104 at the British Columbia Aviation Museum in Canada.

As previously reported, the bomber was originally built by Victory Aircraft of Malton, Ontario in 1944 and was installed along Toronto’s waterfront following its retirement from the RCAF in 1964. In 1999, it was moved to a museum in Downsview Park, where a restoration effort began. However, it was relocated once again when the museum closed in 2011. The machine had spent recent years in storage at Edenvale Aerodrome west of Barrie while its future became a topic of debate.

In July 2018 the British Columbia Aviation Museum became the successful bidder and, now having formally taken possession of the machine from the city of Toronto, the process of restoration to airworthy condition is underway.

The newly released video, narrated by BCAM President John Lewis, details work that has been done since the aircraft was moved into their Restoration Hangar on Oct 16, 2018. Click below to check it out.

The Wait is Over: HK Models Releases New 1/32 Avro Lancaster Mk I Model Kit

HK Models has released their highly anticipated Avro Lancaster model kit in 1/32 scale.

The limited release kit (HKM-01E010) reportedly spans 972mm and measures 664mm in length. It features over 824 parts and includes a one piece molded top and bottom wing section, photo etched details and Cartograf decals for three machines, including W4783 of 460 Squadron and two incarnations of R5868 “S-Sugar” of 83 and 467 Squadron RAAF, which became the first bomber to complete 100 missions.

Wingnut Wings Shares First Model/Sprue Images For Upcoming 1/32 Lancaster Kit

Wingnut Wings has released the first model / sprue images for their upcoming 1/32 Avro Lancaster kit.

Two kits will reportedly be available, including a B.Mk.I/III and a B.Mk.III “Dambusters.” The B.Mk.I/III (32043) will feature a highly detailed RR Merlin XX (for B.Mk.1) or Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28 (for B.Mk.III), optional early and late tailwheels, unweighted or weighted (with full bomb load) main wheels, H2s radar, 500lb (UK and USA), 1000lb, 4000lb “Cookie” and SBC bombs, FN.20 or FN.120 rear turret with optional cut away perspex, early and late bomb aimer’s blisters and windows and early DH.5/40 (needle) and late A5/138 (paddle) type propellers and spinners. Optional dummy engine blocks will also be included so you don’t need to assemble complete engines to build the model. Lancaster FM104 Arrives at New Home, Airworthy Restoration to Begin

Last week, a convoy of trucks carrying Avro Lancaster FM104 arrived at the British Columbia Aviation Museum near Victoria International Airport in North Saanich, Canada.

The bomber was originally built by Victory Aircraft of Malton, Ontario in 1944 and, installed along Toronto’s waterfront following its retirement from the RCAF in 1964. In 1999, it was moved to a museum in Downsview Park, where a restoration effort began. However, it was relocated once again when the museum closed in 2011. The machine has spent recent years in storage at Edenvale Aerodrome west of Barrie while its future became a topic of debate.

In July, the museum became the successful bidder and, now having formally taken possession of the machine from the city of Toronto, the “long process of restoration” will begin. The work will be carried out in cooperation with Victoria Air Maintenance and will focus on returning the machine to flying condition. The machine’s components will reportedly be on public display throughout the process.

First Look: Complete HK 1/32 Avro Lancaster Model

In addition to Wingnut Wings’ announcement of a new 1/32 Lancaster, the Tokyo Model Show also saw HK Models display a complete version of their own new tool 1/32 example of the type.

Details on the kit, including a potential release date, remain unclear, although it has been reported that it will represent the Mk 1 and include markings for R5868 “S-Sugar” of 467 Squadron RAAF, which became the first bomber to complete 100 missions.

Wingnut Wings Announces Development of 1/32 Avro Lancaster Model Kit

At the Tokyo Hobby Show, New Zealand model developer Wingnut Wings announced the development of a new Avro Lancaster model kit in 1/32 scale.

The upcoming kit (32044) will reportedly represent a B.Mk.III “Dambusters” machine and will mark the company’s first foray into WW2 aircraft kits. From the look of the images above, the model will include a great deal of detail, including the “bouncing bomb” used for the raid, which saw 19 Lancasters of 617 Squadron attack a number of German dams, resulting in severe flooding that destroyed or damaged power stations, factories and mines.

The Wingnut Wings Lancaster is currently slated for release sometime in late 2019.

“Very Rare” Avro Lancaster Gun Turret Offered For Sale

An item described as a “very rare original” Avro Lancaster mid upper gun turret has hit the market. The listing states:

Aluminium parts in good condition considering its age, sadly the perspex sections have been broken but enough left to make templates if required. Perfect for a turret restoration as the frame is in good condition and complete. Built by Nash and Thompson, I haven’t cleaned the manufacturers plate too much as it seems to have suffered worse from corrosion and I don’t want to damage it. It is quite large, approx 1.8m wide.

Fundraising Campaign Launched to Recover Remains of Last Dambusters Lancaster

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to recover the remains of Avro Lancaster NF920 “Easy Elsie” from the site where it crash landed during WW2.

The aircraft came to rest in a swamp near Projus, Sweden on October 29, 1944 after being struck by anti-aircraft fire while attempting to bomb the battleship Tirpitz as part of “Operation Obviate.” The crew escaped without serious injury and the machine’s remains were abandoned, remaining at the site until the present day.

The aircraft is said to be the last remaining example of the type from the famous Dambusters 617 Squadron, and the wreck is in jeopardy after being “ravaged by war, time, vandals and souvenir hunters.” Continue reading Fundraising Campaign Launched to Recover Remains of Last Dambusters Lancaster

Lancaster FM104 to Relocate to British Columbia, Airworthy Restoration to Follow

The British Columbia Aviation Museum in North Saanich, Canada has announced the acquisition of Avro Lancaster FM104 from the city of Toronto.

The bomber was originally built by Victory Aircraft of Malton, Ontario in 1944 and installed along Toronto’s waterfront following its retirement from the RCAF in 1964. Now in need of extensive restoration, the machine has spent recent years in storage at Edenvale Aerodrome west of Barrie while its future became the focus of debate.

The Lancaster will be relocated to the museum, located near Victoria International Airport, over the next few months. Restoration will reportedly commence immediately with the goal of returning the machine to airworthy condition in partnership with the a team of vintage aircraft restorers at Victoria Air Maintenance.

BC Aviation Museum President John Lewis states: “I am pleased that many local aircraft manufacturing specialists and vintage aircraft enthusiasts have pledged their time and knowledge to volunteer on this project. Many people at the BC Aviation Museum and the Victoria aviation community have worked hard to make today’s announcement possible. We are now looking forward to the day when Lancaster FM104 goes on display at our museum.”
