Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s Avenger Performs Engine Test As Flight “Getting Closer” [Video]

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s newly restored TBM-3E Avenger C-GCWG has performed an engine as its upcoming return to the air gets closer.

As previously reported, the aircraft (S/N 53858) was constructed in 1945 by General Motors, Eastern Aircraft Division and served with the US Navy until the 1950s. Upon entering civilian service it was converted to a spray plane, operating first in California and then New Brunswick before being retired in 1992.

The Avenger was acquired by the museum in late 2009 and a team of volunteers has since invested thousands of hours to restore it to airworthy condition. It wears the colors of a post-war RCN Avenger AS.3.

“Barnfind” 1943 A75N1 Stearman Offered For Sale

1943 Boeing A75N1 Stearman S/N 75-4532 (N62940) described as a “barnfind owned by the same family for over 50 years” is available for sale.

The airframe reportedly has 2290 TTSN, while the Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine has 377 hrs SMOH. The machine boasts Redline brakes and a Hamilton Standard propeller with 2 hrs SPOH, but is in need of paint and possibly fabric. Its last annual was in 2014, although it is said to be ferryable.

“Rare” Military Piper L-21B Project Offered For Sale

A “rare, very sought after” example of the Piper L-21B Super Cub (PA-18-135) has hit the market.

Described as a military version of a Piper PA18, this particular machine was reportedly built in 1952 and is equipped with a Lycoming O-290-D2. The listing states (in part):

The plane had been stored from 1981 in a farm shed which was purchased in a land sale. It was then outside for around 6 months before we initially listed the plane. When the plane was first listed, we had a lot of storms which unfortunately caused some damage to the wings (shown in the photos)… This is a 1954 rare military version of a Piper PA18, called L21B. They are very sought after. a good thing is that every single part is available should you need it.

MENG Releases New Tool 1/32 Fokker F.1 / Dr.1 Model Kit

MENG has released their highly anticipated new tool F.1/Dr.1 model kit in 1/32 scale.

As previously reported, the kit (QS-002) is a boxing of the Wingnut Wings Fokker Triplane kit and is described as “a carefully studied, large scale” model kit “with precise details,” boasting “accurate exteriors, wing structure and realistic fabric covering.” Additional features reportedly include “completely replicated” cockpit interior and engine construction, PE cooling jackets and sights for the machine guns.

Three build options are included, allowing a representation of the Fokker F.1, Dr.1 (Early Production) or Dr.1 (Late Production). The rudder and ailerons can also be installed at selected angles.

Four livery options are reportedly included representing 425/17 flown by Manfred von Richthofen, 103/17 flown by Werner Voss, 206/17 flown by Hermann Göring and 202/17 flown by Walter Göttsch.

1944 North American Aviation SNJ-5 S/N 84-923 (N3931R) is available for sale.

The airframe reportedly has 11032.2 hrs TTSN. The Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engine has 540.3 hrs SMOH by Covington Engines (2012) and spins a Hamilton Standard 2 blade propeller with 27.4 hrs SMOH. The machine includes an avionics package, T-6G steerable tailwheel and an O/H oil cooler (installed 8/2020). Annual was completed 8/2020.

Airfix to Release Spitfire FR Mk.XIV Kit With Racing Liveries

Airfix has announced the upcoming release of a new 1/48 Spitfire FR Mk.XIV model kit with racing liveries.

The soon to be released offering (A05139) is based on the new tool FR Mk.XIV kit (A05135) released in 2019 and includes two marking options representing post-war racing machines:

Scheme A – Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk.XIV G-FIRE, Duxford, Cambridgeshire, England, 1988
Scheme B – Supermarine Spitfire FR Mk.XIV, CF-GMZ ‘Edmonton Canada, The Crossroads of the World’, Canada, 1949

This engine was removed from Harrier GR9 ZD327 after its last ever flight. At the time of removal the engine was fully serviceable, unfortunately at some point thereafter the engine suffered minor damage to the cold nozzle outlet duct area, this was caused by a very careless forklift driver. *The engine has subsequently had the three LP fan stages & stators removed & these are not included with the sale of this engine.* Obviously the engine is now no longer airworthy or ground runnable but it would make an ideal display item for a museum or Harrier enthusiast or for use as a ground instructional training aid. 1952 Beechcraft C-45H S/N 52-10897 (N606PA) has hit the market.

The airframe reportedly has 8,875 hrs TTSN, while the two Pratt & Whitney R985 AN-1 engines have 475 hrs SMOH (58 hrs STOH) and 75 hrs SMOH. The aircraft is fitted with two Hamilton Standard propellers with 0 hrs since A.D. (4/20). The listing states (in part):

This aircraft has just completed an extensive annual which included the following: Wings recently pulled and epoxy primed internally, new leading edges replaced (removed de-ice boots). All new oil / fuel lines / scat tubing etc NOS control surfaces with fresh covering. Landing gear & wheels painted, seals were replaced as well. All new tires & tubes. For Sale: Newly Restored, Multiple Award Winning XP-82 Twin Mustang Prototype

The newly restored XP-82 Twin Mustang prototype S/N 44-83887 (N887XP) is now available for sale.

The airframe reportedly has 25 hrs since restoration by Tom Reilly, while the Packard -1650-23 (RH turning) and Packard V-1650-25 (LH turning) engines have 25 hrs SMOH by Vintage V-12s. The propellers are Custom MT 4 blade types with 25 hrs since new. The machine has full dual controls, an avionics package and bare metal exterior with Stars and Bars, as flown in 1944.

Right hand seat can perform all flight functions with the exception of Landing Gear Up, Aileron Trim, Primary Radio, Start and Prime Switches. Right hand seat can control elevator and rudder trims, all engine controls, Landing Gear Down, fuel controls, coolant doors, CAT, and all lightning.

The aircraft is a multiple award winner, taking home Grand Champion Post WWII, Phoenix Award and two Golden Wrench Awards at EAA Airventure in 2019. It is currently being offered for $12,000,000. Click here to check out the complete listing.
