Spitfire Mk IXe SL633 For Sale: “Licensed and in Annual”

Newly listed for sale is Spitfire Mk IXe SL633 (VH-RAF). The aircraft was restored by Historic Flying/Aircraft Restoration Company (ARCo) UK, circa 2007 – 2010 and has 134.9 hrs total time since restoration / 6.6 hrs since IRAN in 2024. It is powered by a RR Packard Merlin 266 with 28.1 hrs SMOH by Vintage V-12s / 6.6 hrs since IRAN 2024 by Vintage V-12s, CA, USA.

Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk. IXe. The identities of this particular aircraft have included: SL633 (British Royal Air Force), DU-K and JT-10 (Free Czechoslovak Air Force), 20-42 (Israeli Air Force), and UB-425 (Myanmar Air Force which was originally formed as the “Burmese Air Force”). It was one of the last Spitfires produced via the Vickers Supermarine plant at Castle Bromwich, England… During July of 2023, SL633 suffered minor damage during a landing, roll-out accident in Washington State, USA. The Spitfire was subsequently sold and exported to Australia, where an IRAN and return to Airworthiness was carried-out by its current owner. SL633 was then placed on the Australian CASA Register as VH-RAF and remains airworthy.

A full-scale, static Spitfire Mk IX reproduction has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

It’s taken over four years to build and now it’s time for a new keeper! This is a hand-built replica that is timber-framed and over-topped with fibreglass. It isn’t a moulded replica but was made as a one-man project that has taken thousands of hours – and some sweat and tears.

A web search will find the Spitfire story and interviews with me about it. The Spitfire will feature in a new book telling its story, ‘How to Build a Spitfire’, which is to be published in January 2024 by Head of Zeus. It’s an aircraft with a back story! It is designed as a static display and not as a travelling exhibition piece, but it could be adapted to suit needs. Quite heavy in parts.

Cockpit – fairly complete but needs few more items to make it perfect.

A full-scale Spitfire Mk.IX static reproduction has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

Newly built, highly detailed static replica suitable for a variety of purposes. This museum quality reproduction has been painstakingly created over the last 3 years taking over 2,500 hours of work. The main structure is a plywood interior which mirrors real Spitfire frames in position which has been over-covered with GRP (Fibre Glass). The GRP is graded to last over 25 years and longer if kept painted. Flying surfaces are fixed to prevent water ingress. Viewable cockpit interior, not absolutely complete but very convincing. Tyres are real and inflated on plywood rims which turn on robust steel axels. Tailwheel is non-operable but towing dolly available with sale… Finished in the colours of 74 Sqn, PV144 was flown by Squadron Leader Hayter in the ground attack role in late 1944.

1943 Spitfire IX For Sale: “0 Hrs Since 100 Point Restoration to Highest Standard”

1943 Supermarine Spitfire IX (S/N MH603 VH-IXF) has hit the market. The listing states (in part):

Built for the RAF, MH603 rolled off the Vickers-Armstrong production line in Castle Bromwich during the spring of 1943 and delivered to 39 MU (Maintenance Unit) on 15 October that same year. She then passed onto 405 RSU (Repair and Salvage Unit) at Croydon on 25 October 1943. The Spitfire commenced Operational Service with 331 (Norwegian) Squadron on 3 January 1944 and served operationally coded FN*B (as she is marked today) and flown by Capt. Bjorn Bjornstad, then transferred to 274 Squadron and coded JJ*K on 2 June 1944 where she was flown by Warr Off O.S.G Baker. The Spitfire is noted as going to Fighter Leader’s School, FLS Millfield on 21 August 1944 and then to the Central Fighter Establishment (CFE) Tangmere on 1 June 1945. Following its operational service, the aircraft passed through a number of training and maintenance units.

The aircraft reportedly has 0 hrs since a “comprehensive 100 point restoration by Vintage Fighter Restorations, Scone, NSW, Australia circa 2009-2021.” The restoration was carried out to “the highest standard,” employing “all original British hardware, along with many NOS (new old stock) components and the fitting of new wing spars.” The Rolls Royce Merlin 70 also has 0 hrs SMOH by Air Sparrow Inc, as does the Rotol R12/4F5/5 propeller (0 hrs SPOH by Skycraft UK).

The machine is expected to return to the air in the fourth quarter of 2021. It is located in Scone, N.S.W. Australia and is available for £3,500,000. Click here to check out the listing.

Spitfire XVIe For Sale: “13 Hrs Since Complete Restoration”

Spitfire XVIe TE392 is available for sale.

The machine was constructed by Vickers-Armstrong in 1945 and did not see wartime service, instead operating with various RAF units until 1952. It was then used for ground instruction before becoming a gate guard at numerous RAF bases. TE392 was acquired by warbird collector Doug Arnold in 1984 and began restoration, however before completion, it had passed to the Lone Star Flight Museum (where it was photographed above in 2002). With restoration complete, TE392 returned to the air in 1999 and performed on the air show circuit until being damaged during Hurricane Ike in 2008. The machine was sent for preservation and storage, being sold in 2017 and shipped to Australia. There, Bishopp Aviation completely disassembled the aircraft and completed a 100 point restoration to the highest standard over a two-year period. It returned to the air in January 2020 and currently operates with Fighter Pilot in Brisbane.

TE392 reportedly has 13.0 hrs since comprehensive 100 point restoration (including new wing spars) by Performance Aero (circa 2018-2019) while the Packard Merlin 266 engine has 13.0 hrs SMOH by Vintage V-12s. It includes a Trig VHF Comm, Trig Transponder and Garmin Aera 660 GPS as well as 40 gal (Imp) wing tanks for extended range and an automatic H20 spray bar system in radiators.

Full-Scale Spitfire Mk 1 / MJ-100 Reproduction Project Offered For Sale

In addition to the Spitfire Mk IX reproduction project posted for sale yesterday, a full-scale Spitfire Mk 1 / MJ-100 project has also been listed for sale.

The Mk 1 project was reportedly built from Jurca MJ-100 plans and includes authentic Spitfire blueprints. The listing states (in part):

No skin on fuselage frame, just skeleton. Does not come with electronics, mechanical, engine. This aircraft was designed and built to be a flying replica, however since it is not finished and to avoid any possible liability issues, I am offering it without the engine and propellor as a NON-flying display replica. I am not selling molds, but they can be taken again, using this replica as a plug. So, you could make molds from this plane to produce an entire squadron of other planes.

Full-Scale Spitfire Mk IX Reproduction Project Offered For Sale

A full-scale Spitfire Mk IX project touted as “very detailed and accurate” has hit the market.

According to the listing, the machine was constructed by a father and son team in Argentina back in 2007 and follows original blueprints of a Spitfire Mk IX. Vinyl-ester resin and aerospace quality fiberglass were reportedly used in construction with the aid of two aeronautical engineers to ensure the correct adaptation from metal construction (of original planes) to composites. The listing states (in part):

In order to produce this plane, it was necessary to build a full-size mock up, with all the details, then molds to laminate each part. I am not selling molds, but they can be taken again, using this replica as a plug. So, you could make molds from this plane to produce an entire squadron of other planes. There are some parts missing as they were never built with this plane: Ailerons (both) One flap… This aircraft was designed and built to be a flying replica, however since it is not finished and to avoid any possible liability issues, I am offering it without the engine and propeller as a NON-flying display replica.
