1940 Stearman PT-17 Project For Sale: “Isolated Damage, Has Low Time, High End Rebuilt Engine”

A 1940 Stearman project described as “a gorgeous prewar Stearman with isolated, very repairable damage and a super low time high end rebuilt engine” has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

1940 Boeing Stearman PT-17, 7501TT, ONLY 65 SMOH W-670-6A main gear damaged, overall nice!… This aircraft was in military service until 1945, and the civilian logbooks start with an annual inspection in 1945! Complete logs since 1945 are included! Modified for spaying in 1962, first major rebuild and converting back to non-spray in 1972. Major nuts and bolts rebuild 1992. Refresh, IRAN and paint 2008. Zinc chromate to frame and mechanisms! Highly detailed and accurate markings, paint in great condition!! Stits Polyfiber. Fresh overhauled w670-6a engine done by Radial Engines Limited in Guthrie Oklahoma installed 3/2022.only 65.5 SMOH now! Remote oil filter installed with engine, with STC and 337! This airplane sustained damage when making an approach to landing while operating at a grass runway with other Stearmans, giving rides. Both cockpits are highly detailed and both dashes contain full instrumentation! This was a show-like quality airplane before this incident, so this airplane will require only repair of the isolated damaged components, not a restoration!! Sold with logbooks for airframe from 1945 to the present. Engine logbooks and 15 pages of information about the major overhaul to the present. Prop logbook till the present. Plus loads of 337’s, equipment list and original specs, s.t.c.s and other paperwork.

I have one Stearman Project with new wing and center section kits, new stringers (top, bottom and sides), including 4 different engines: Two 300 Lycomings, one R-985 PNW and one 440 horse Wright Engine.I have everything from carburetors, magnetos, governors, enough wing hardware for two airplanes, several stabilizers, front and back cockpit cowling, two to three firewalls, new old stock landing gear, tons of wheel and brake parts, landing gear scissors, all kinds of motor mounts for the engines, several BT-13 dishpans, hundreds of fuselage clamps, a multitude of instruments, extra wheels, two 2D-30 props, one windshield, complete sets of Cobain Struts plus extras, complete set of N-Struts, complete set of flying wires, elevators, front and back throttle quadrant, new wood wing kits, two fins, one fuel tank, seats, front and back sticks, all rudder/tail wheel cables and complete trim tab setup. Gear leg farings and many faring attachments.

It’s a bit more than a project, it’s ready be fired. I spent 9 years of my life restoring this… have all the log books… She is a BEAUTY… everything has been ZYGLOED or MAGNA FLUXED, nothing went uninspected. Have all the paperwork.

“Museum Owned, Damaged, Cheap” Stearman PT-17 For Sale

A “museum owned, damaged, cheap” Stearman PT-17 is currently available for sale.

The machine is reportedly owned by the Palm Springs Air Museum and was used for airshows, displays and rides until it “lost power just after takeoff” while conducting a passenger flight.

The experienced pilot turned the airplane back to the airport and made a hard, mostly controlled landing, which seriously damaged the fron t of the airplane. The failure was determined to be a fuel line which had collapsed, blocking flow to the engine.
