New Photo Collection Showcases the Legendary F-4 Phantom in Multiple Roles

Coming soon from Air World and author Robbie Shaw is a unique photographic exploration of the legendary F-4 Phantom captured by author Robbie Shaw during his time as an Air Traffic Controller in the RAF.

The F-4 Phantom, first flown in 1958, became a versatile warplane, excelling as both an air superiority interceptor and a ground-attack bomber. It served with distinction in the US Navy, Marines, and Air Force, with various models like the F-4C, F-4G, and F-4E, and was used globally by NATO allies, Israel, Egypt, and many others. The Phantom, famously used in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, continued in service for over six decades. It was also used as a target drone after retiring from front-line duties. As of 2024, the Phantom remains in service with countries like Greece, Turkey, and Iran, making it one of the longest-serving military aircraft in history.

McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom in the Air: Aerial Photographs of the Famous Cold War Interceptor and Fighter-Bomber is described as a “breathtaking collection of air-to-air photographs, taken during seven flights, showcasing the Phantom in a variety of roles and settings. These images include variants like the RF-4C, F-4C/D/E/F/G/J/K, captured while flying with the RAF, USAF, Luftwaffe, and others. Additional photos from Shaw’s friends in the Falklands, Europe, and South Korea further enrich the book.”

The hardcover title spans 224 pages and is currently available for pre-order with release set for June 30.

F-4 Phantom Cockpit / Tail Fin For Sale: “Has Ejector Seats and Most Original Instruments”

An F-4 Phantom “cockpit section and tail fin” has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

Full cockpit section of ex RAF F4 Phantom FGR2, reg number XT907, professionally cut from the airframe and mounted onto a steel frame with wheels for easier moving. Cockpit section comes complete with ejector seats and most of the original instrumentation in place in both pilot and navigator seating positions. Also included is the full tail fin from the aircraft, displaying 74 squadron markings, which was the last RAF squadron to operate the Phantom. I have also acquired over the years a collection of most of the other instruments which would be needed to complete the cockpit, which could be negotiated separately to the sale of the cockpit section. Original tech log included, which shows some of the history of the aircraft… The cockpit section is in “original condition” and has not been touched or altered since it was decommissioned by the RAF. As such there would be some work required in order to bring it back to a fully restored “pristine” state. Nothing structural needs doing as the aircraft is completely sound, but it would benefit from an external repaint and cleaning and/or refurbishment of the cockpit interior.

F4H-1F Phantom II For Sale: “Under Restoration to Airworthy Condition”

A 1959 McDonnell F4H-1F Phantom II (S/N 145310) has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

F4H-1F s/n 145310 was delivered to the Navy in 1959 and was the 11th pre-production aircraft built. 1961 was a memorable year for the jet. On 22nd April 1961, it carried a very impressive 22 Mk83 500lb bombs on various hardpoints under the aircraft and dropped them on a range at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This demonstration was the deciding factor for the United States Air Force to also order the aircraft… Never demilled, BuNu 145310 has been under restoration to airworthy condition for the past 10 years by Aircraft Restoration Services LLC at the French Valley Airport, CA. It is being offered for sale As Is, Where Is. Major items left to complete are the two engine overhauls, two ejection seats, and avionics.

E-Flite Releases New 80mm F-4 Phantom II RC Model

E-Flite has released their new 80mm F-4 Phantom RC model in both BNF and PNP versions.

As previously reported, The offering is described as an “Extra Scale replica that delivers incredible performance in a great handling model.” Features reportedly include removable ordnance and tanks, strut covers, molded-in panel lines, LED lights, full-flying stabs, flaps and sequenced nose gear doors. Power is provided by a factory-installed high-power 6S-compatible brushless inrunner motor and 100-amp ESC.

The BNF version also includes a Spektrum 6-channel receiver with DSMX technology, optional-use SAFE Select flight envelope protection and AS3X technology offering “unmatched stability and precision.”

Brickmania Releases 1/35 F-4C Phantom II LEGO Model Kit

Brickmania has released a new, limited edition 1/35 F-4C Phantom LEGO model kit.

The offering reportedly includes 1,290 “new-condition LEGO bricks,” two custom-printed minifigures, retractable landing gear and a detailed cockpit with custom printing. The model also includes representations of armament including four AIM-7E Sparrows, four AIM-9 Sidewinders, two MK-77 napalm canisters and a SUU-16/A gun pod.

World’s Only Privately Owned F-4 Phantom Capable of Flight Offered For Sale

A 1959 McDonnell F4H-1F Phantom II touted as the world’s only privately owned F-4 capable of flight has hit the market.

The machine S/N 150310 (N815WF) was delivered to the Navy in 1959 as the 11th pre-production example of the type. In 1961 it demonstrated its capabilities by carrying 22 Mk83 500lb bombs which were dropped at a range at Fort Bragg, North Carolina – a feat that is said to have been the deciding factor in the USAF’s decision to order the aircraft. In 1961 it became one of three F-4’s to commemorate the 50th anniversary of U.S. Naval Aviation. It was retired in 1964 after 461 hrs of service.

150310 has been under restoration for the past decade by Aircraft Restoration Services, LLC located at the French Valley Airport in California and the process is said to be 80-85% complete. The airframe has reportedly undergone a complete IRAN per U.S. Navy standards and has also been completely rewired. Additional work has included overhauling components to 0 time condition, rebuilding the fuel system with new fuel cells, rebuilding all hydraulics with stainless steel lines, installing new wheels and brakes and overhauling all three hydraulic systems as well as two pneumatic systems.

F-4 Phantom Arrives At New Home Following Community Effort

Following a community effort begun by two USAF veterans, F-4E-48-MC Phantom II 71-0247 has arrived at its new home in Grove, Oklahoma.

The aircraft performed its maiden flight in 1972 and went on to serve with the 4th, 52nd and 37th Tactical Fighter Wings, operating in North Carolina, Germany and California, respectively. The machine was retired from service in 1990 and was parked for a time in Arizona before being transferred to Holloman AFB in New Mexico, where it saw use as a ground trainer.

By 2017, the Phantom was awaiting donation through the GSAXcess SASP system, which prompted “Friends of the F-4 Phantom” and the Grove, Oklahoma city council to request the aircraft for use as a memorial for current and past members of the military.

The request was granted in April 2016 and last month Worldwide Aircraft Recovery began the process of relocating the Phantom to its new home. The move was completed on Wednesday, and the aircraft is now positioned on property donated by Ferra Aviation and located adjacent from its facility at Grove Municipal Airport.
