Spitfire XVIe For Sale: “13 Hrs Since Complete Restoration”

Spitfire XVIe TE392 is available for sale.

The machine was constructed by Vickers-Armstrong in 1945 and did not see wartime service, instead operating with various RAF units until 1952. It was then used for ground instruction before becoming a gate guard at numerous RAF bases. TE392 was acquired by warbird collector Doug Arnold in 1984 and began restoration, however before completion, it had passed to the Lone Star Flight Museum (where it was photographed above in 2002). With restoration complete, TE392 returned to the air in 1999 and performed on the air show circuit until being damaged during Hurricane Ike in 2008. The machine was sent for preservation and storage, being sold in 2017 and shipped to Australia. There, Bishopp Aviation completely disassembled the aircraft and completed a 100 point restoration to the highest standard over a two-year period. It returned to the air in January 2020 and currently operates with Fighter Pilot in Brisbane.

TE392 reportedly has 13.0 hrs since comprehensive 100 point restoration (including new wing spars) by Performance Aero (circa 2018-2019) while the Packard Merlin 266 engine has 13.0 hrs SMOH by Vintage V-12s. It includes a Trig VHF Comm, Trig Transponder and Garmin Aera 660 GPS as well as 40 gal (Imp) wing tanks for extended range and an automatic H20 spray bar system in radiators.

Spitfire Reproduction Airframe Project Offered For Sale

A 3/4 scale Spitfire reproduction project has been spotted for sale. The listing states (in part):

Nice Project Plane. Items that are missing are an engine, propeller, a few gauges, misc. lights. It’s been inside at a local museum for years and looks to be in very good condition.

Full-Scale Spitfire Mk 1 / MJ-100 Reproduction Project Offered For Sale

In addition to the Spitfire Mk IX reproduction project posted for sale yesterday, a full-scale Spitfire Mk 1 / MJ-100 project has also been listed for sale.

The Mk 1 project was reportedly built from Jurca MJ-100 plans and includes authentic Spitfire blueprints. The listing states (in part):

No skin on fuselage frame, just skeleton. Does not come with electronics, mechanical, engine. This aircraft was designed and built to be a flying replica, however since it is not finished and to avoid any possible liability issues, I am offering it without the engine and propellor as a NON-flying display replica. I am not selling molds, but they can be taken again, using this replica as a plug. So, you could make molds from this plane to produce an entire squadron of other planes.

Full-Scale Spitfire Mk IX Reproduction Project Offered For Sale

A full-scale Spitfire Mk IX project touted as “very detailed and accurate” has hit the market.

According to the listing, the machine was constructed by a father and son team in Argentina back in 2007 and follows original blueprints of a Spitfire Mk IX. Vinyl-ester resin and aerospace quality fiberglass were reportedly used in construction with the aid of two aeronautical engineers to ensure the correct adaptation from metal construction (of original planes) to composites. The listing states (in part):

In order to produce this plane, it was necessary to build a full-size mock up, with all the details, then molds to laminate each part. I am not selling molds, but they can be taken again, using this replica as a plug. So, you could make molds from this plane to produce an entire squadron of other planes. There are some parts missing as they were never built with this plane: Ailerons (both) One flap… This aircraft was designed and built to be a flying replica, however since it is not finished and to avoid any possible liability issues, I am offering it without the engine and propeller as a NON-flying display replica.

Extensively Restored Spitfire FR XVIIIe For Sale With Reduced Price

Vickers-Supermarine Spitfire FR XVIIIe G-BUOS (S/N SM845) is available for sale with a newly reduced price.

The aircraft was built in Chattis Hill, England in 1945 and delivered to 39 MU (Maintenance Unit) that same year, serving with both the RAF and Indian Air Force. It was one of eight such machines recovered by Duxford-based Ormond and Wensley Haydon-Baillie in 1977 and was later returned to the air by Historic Flying Ltd.

In 2010 the machine suffered a landing accident in Norway and was subsequently returned to the UK, where it received an extensive restoration to flying condition by Airframe Assemblies and Historic Flying Limited. It returned to the air in December 2013.

The airframe reportedly has 246.10 Hours Total Time Since New (71 Hours Since Restoration – 2013), while the Rolls Royce Griffon 65 engine has 71 Hours SMOH by Retro Track and Air. The machine is currently being offered with a reduced price of £1,450,000. Click here to check out the complete listing.

Airfix Releases New Spitfire, Hurricane, P-40B Boxings

Three of the most recent offerings from Airfix are WW2 icons including a 1/48 Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 (A05127A), 1/48 Spitfire Mk.1 (A05126A) and 1/72 P-40B Warhawk (A01003B).

Details on the new offerings are scarce, although they are described as reboxings, with the Hurricane and Spitfire kits containing changed decals. The P-40B kit features a livery previously released in a starter set (A55101A) representing 41-13297 “284,” a machine that was undergoing repairs in a hangar at Wheeler Field on December 7, 1941 and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Eduard to Release New Tool Spitfire Mk I-V Model Kits

Eduard has announced the upcoming release of a new tool series of Spitfire model kits covering early mark variants. Specifically, the project will reportedly cover several versions of the early Merlin powered Spitfires, including the Mk.I, Mk.II and Mk.Vs, as well as Seafires later. The first release will be the Mk I in 1/48 scale, which will be offered in a “couple of boxings.”

“Under Restoration” Spitfire LF Vb Offered For Sale

An “under restoration” Vickers Supermarine Spitfire LF Vb (BL688) is available for sale. The listing states (in part):

An incredible investment opportunity to acquire probably the longest documented combat history of a WW2 Spitfire in the world today! BL688 was delivered into service on the 25th of January 1942 and served until 29th of May 1945. It served with five RAF Fighter Squadrons, as well as the USAAF 335 FG & US Navy on D-Day. So far, 47 Allied pilots have been identified from Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Free French, India, Poland , UK , New Zealand and USA. Some of the men served only a short period and met their fate in combat against the enemy. Others flew BL688 with distinction and survived the war and went onto achieve great things.

First Look: Sprues, Test Build for Airfix’s New Tool Spitfire Mk Vc

Airfix has shared photos of the first test sprues for their upcoming new tool Spitfire Mk Vc model kit in 1/72 scale.

As previously reported, the company states that this first release (A02108) will represent “aircraft equipped with the distinctive chin mounted Vokes air filter, which whilst reducing the top speed of the aircraft, allowed it to be operated more effectively in warmer and sand filled Mediterranean and desert climates.” Two livery profiles have also been posted for ER180 of 307 FS 31 FG and JL115 of 2 Squadron.

The new images show the first plastic frames for the new kit as well as the first test build from the first test components. The company states that “Every aspect of the kit’s design will need to be assessed, from surface detail to checking for sink marks and from the general fit and finish of the model to checking overall design tolerances.” Therefore, they note that parts are “still subject to change before the tooling can be released for production.”
