New Two Volume Biography of Max Immelmann Dispels Myths, Provides New Insights

Recently released by Aeronaut Books and author Dr. Hannes Täger is the two volume set Immelmann – Life and Death of an Aviation Legend: Biography of Fighter Pilot Oberleutnant Max Immelmann (1890-1916), which tells the true story of Max Immelmann, one of the first fighter pilots and creator of air combat tactics, who was a close comrade and rival of Oswald Boelcke.

This comprehensive biography – richly illustrated with nearly 700 images – dispels old misconceptions and myths. It also provides remarkable new insights into this legendary Saxon aviator, his private and romantic life, his air combats, his death, and his legacy.

The volumes are available in Hardcover, paperback and Kindle editions. Volume 1 has 279 pages, Volume 2 has 323 pages.

Coming soon from Pen & Sword and author Chris Goss is Royal Flying Corps In Combat: Rare Archive Images of Aerial Warfare Over the Western Front in WW1, which showcases an extraordinary collection of photos and stories of downed aircraft from the Western Front.

Each image tells the tale of the aviators behind them. For example, Second Lieutenant Gilbert Insall and Air Mechanic Thomas Donald, after their Vickers FB 5 Gunbus was damaged, made repairs under enemy fire and returned to base. They were shot down again weeks later, but Insall later escaped captivity and received the Victoria Cross. Chris Goss delves into the stories behind the crashes, even identifying enemy pilots who shot down some of the planes. The mysterious case of Second Lieutenant John Holtom’s DH 2, whose body was never recovered, remains unsolved. This book also reveals how many surviving pilots went on to have distinguished careers, including Montagu Chidson, who, after being captured in 1915, later rescued vital diamonds from Amsterdam in 1940 while serving with M.I.9. Royal Flying Corps in Combat is a captivating account of the aircraft, battles, and aviators of the First World War.

New Book Explores All WW1 Russian Aircraft Types

New from Aeronaut Books is Russian Aircraft of WWI by noted aviation historian Viktor Kulikov.

The book covers all aircraft of Russian design and all aircraft of foreign design built under license in Russia. It includes more than 600 photos and drawings and scale drawings of 17 aircraft. In addition it has 17 color profiles.

The 422 page book is now available in paperback format.

Aeronaut Releases Second Volume on German WW1 Aircraft in Polish Service

Aeronaut Books recently released Mateusz Kabatek’s second volume on German aircraft in Polish service during WW1.

German Aircraft in Polish Service Volume 2 continues the series with a detailed look at the Albatros C.XII, C.XV, and J.I reconnaissance and infantry aircraft, as well as the Friedrichshafen G.III and Gotha G.IV bombers used by the Polish air service after WWI. Based on previously unpublished archival sources, this volume reconstructs the operational history of these aircraft in the turbulent early years of Polish independence… it reveals how German designs were adapted to local needs and used in conflicts against Ukraine and Soviet Russia.

The new title is illustrated with over 110 rare photos and 15 color profiles across its 97 pages. It follows Volume 1 which focuses on the Halberstadt CL.II, CL.IV, & C.V; LVG C.VI and Hannover CL.V.

Aeronaut Releases 25th Volume in “Lavish” Account of Blue Max Airmen

Aeronaut Books recently released volume 25 of the Blue Max Airmen series by Lance Bronnenkant, which tells “the real story” of the German airmen awarded the Pour le Mérite during the Great War. The series is described as…

…the most detailed and graphically lavish account of these heroes ever produced, covering the men in context with the war’s chronology of events. For each recipient a comprehensive, well-illustrated biography of the man is given, together with photos of the aircraft he flew, followed by details of his service, including other awards won. Color profiles of the aircraft are also provided for interest to enthusiasts and as references for modelers.

The newly released 25th volume covers fighter aces Thom, Bäumer, Neckel, and Degelow and includes 150 photographs and 19 color profiles of aircraft flown by these men in its 145 pages.
